I founded Write Wilmington during the Pandemic. The motivation was simple. I had heard from multiple students and friends that though the act of writing itself is a solitary activity, it is uninspiring and difficult to have to do so for day after day in isolation.

And so Write Wilmington was born. It is a free, online writing initiative whose goal was, and remains, the same: to provide inspiration and a safe space to writers of all backgrounds. In the one hour that we spend together, guided instructions are provided by a variety of instructors: faculty and final-year graduate students of the Department of Creative Writing at UNCW, alumni, and friends of the program. Our hope is that attendees will take these drafts and continue working on them, whether for personal fulfillment or for publication. Thus far, Write Wilmington has served close to 1600 writers from all over the United States as well as countries as diverse as India, Sri Lanka, Japan, Canada, Bolivia, Brazil, and Ireland.

NINE STORIES

The current (SEVENTH!) season of Write Wilmington runs from Sep 27-Nov 22, 2024. The theme is Nine Stories. Nine instructors will lead one session each. We hope that by the end of the season, attendees would have written nine different short stories and thereby taken a step toward putting together a short story collection of their own.

In April 2024, Write Wilmington had its first-ever in-person reading event. My team and I are hopeful that there will be many more in the months and years to come.
